The Reds captain found the net with a 25-yard free-kick on 27 minutes, shortly after Jake Livermore had put the Tigers ahead with the game's first shot on target.
Liverpool's afternoon started badly, as it was confirmed that star striker Daniel Sturridge would be out of action for between six and eight weeks.
Things got even worse for the Reds on 20 minutes, when Livermore, who had never previously scored a top-flight goal, unleashed a long-range effort that took a huge deflection off Martin Skrtel and looped over the head of Simon Mignolet.
Hull have not yet beaten Liverpool in 16 previous attempts, and their hopes of doing so for the first time were quickly dashed.
Curtis Davies brought down Jordan Henderson on the edge of the penalty area and was issued with a yellow card by referee Howard Webb. Hull's punishment then increased as Gerrard drilled the ball into the corner of the net.
