Hull City recorded their first ever victory over Liverpool as they ran out 3-1 winners at the KC Stadium in the Premier League.

Jake Livermore put the hosts ahead after 20 minutes with a deflected effort, but Steven Gerrard soon equalised with a free kick.

The Tigers stepped up their game in the second half and scored twice in the final 20 minutes to earn all three points.

First David Meyler scored in the 72nd minute to restore Hull's lead and with three minutes of normal time remaining Martin Skrtel put through his own net.

Was the result fair?

Yes. Hull did indeed deserve all the three points. Steve Bruce's side failed to make much of an impact in attack in the first half but still took the lead through a Livermore deflected effort. They really stepped up their game in the second half and, on that performance alone, they deserved the victory.

Hull's performance

As expected, Hull struggled to control possession in the first 45 minutes but they did perform well defensively, making sure that the likes of Luis Suarez, Victor Moses and Raheem Sterling were kept at bay. Even Philippe Coutinho failed to do much against a defensively compact Hull side after he came on in the second half. Moreover, the hosts' confidence in their ability to eke out a win grew as the match progressed and they really took the game to the Reds in the final 30 minutes.

Liverpool's performance

This has to be one of Liverpool's worst performances this season. The big guns all went missing and even Suarez could only show flashes of his brilliance. The Reds players failed to show their technical brilliance on the ball and although they could argue that they were unfortunate with the first and the third Hull goal, they should look at why they failed to get the better of their opponents when they went at them in droves.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Yannick Sagbo: The 25-year-old was often found isolated in the first half but when he had the ball at his feet, he was a nuisance for the Liverpool defenders. He caused them all sorts of problems, with his quick passes, running and unpredictability. The Ivory Coast international was also the architect of his side's third goal as he made amends for his miss just moments earlier by teeing up Tom Huddlestone.

Biggest gaffe

It was less of a gaffe and more of a brilliant save from Allan McGregor, but Moses should have done better with his chance just before Hull's second goal. Suarez put in a ball from the right that Moses just had to tap in from yards out, but his attempt was thwarted by the home goalkeeper.

Referee performance

Howard Webb had a pretty good game and did not have to make any controversial decisions. He was sensible with his yellow cards and kept the proceedings under control. Having said that, it should be added that the contest did not get physical or cynical at any point, so it was a match that was largely easy to officiate.

Hull: Hull will look to build on their win when they travel to London to take on Arsenal in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Liverpool: Liverpool will hope for home respite as they welcome Norwich City to Anfield on Wednesday.
