Barcelona are reportedly at the head of the queue for Lille forward Jonathan David, who could be available on a free transfer this summer.

Barcelona are reportedly at the head of the queue for Lille forward Jonathan David.

The Canada international has again been in excellent form for Lille during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring eight goals and registering two assists in 12 appearances in all competitions.

David has managed five goals in his opening six Ligue 1 matches of the season, while he found the back of the net against Real Madrid in the Champions League last week.

The 24-year-old's penalty saw Lille record a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid, with the European and Spanish champions losing for the first time in all competitions since January.

David's contract with Lille is due to expire at the end of June, and there is currently a host of speculation surrounding his future, with a number of clubs said to be in the mix for his signature, including Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Juventus.

Barcelona 'emerge as serious contenders' for David

However, according to Sport, Barcelona have emerged as the favourites, with the Catalan giants determined to add a new striker to their squad for the 2025-26 campaign.

Due to the club's financial situation, it will have to be a low-cost option, and David is set to be available on a free transfer unless Lille are able to sign him to a new deal in the near future.

As it stands, Barcelona would be able to free to enter into discussions with David over a pre-contract in January, but a number of other major clubs are also believed to be looking to do the same.

Robert Lewandowski has been in excellent form for Barcelona during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring nine goals and registering two assists in 10 appearances in all competitions.

However, the Poland international will be 37 next year, and the Catalan giants are searching for a long-term replacement, with David seemingly emerging as their number one choice.

Would David be a good signing for Barcelona?

Players of David's quality and age do not often become available on free transfers, and there is believed to be serious Premier League interest in the Canadian, which is hardly a surprise.

Lille have allegedly still not given up hope of convincing David to sign a new deal, but all of the signs are currently pointing to him leaving for pastures new in 2025.

David's goal against Real Madrid was actually his fourth in 10 Champions League matches, while he has managed 76 goals and 11 assists in 152 games for Lille in France's top flight.

Barcelona need to add another forward to their squad next year, and it would be a huge statement of intent if they were able to beat a number of Premier League clubs to his signature considering that the most lucrative offers are expected to arrive from England's top flight.
