Roy Evans believes that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers got his tactics wrong for last night's match against Basel, which pushed them out of the Champions League.

Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans believes that Brendan Rodgers took the wrong approach in last night's match against Basel, which resulted in the Reds' Champions League exit.

The Merseyside outfit needed a victory to reach the knockout rounds of the competition, but could only clinch a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Evans believes that Liverpool should have focused on trying to storm out of the blocks rather than maintain a patient approach to the game.

"The way we approached the game was a bit negative for me," Evans told talkSPORT. "We started the game - a game we needed to win - with a really low tempo. We didn't put them under pressure and I'm thinking, 'go for them'.

"If you need to win, why not put them under pressure from the word go? We waited until we were down to ten men with 20 minutes to go and then we throw everything at them. We nearly got there but why not do it from the start? That's the only gripe I've got."

Liverpool secured just one victory out of six Group B games.
