Newcastle, Sunderland punished by FA

Newcastle and Sunderland have been hit with £40,000 and £20,000 fines respectively following both clubs' failure to control their players during the Tyne-Wear derby.

Newcastle United and Sunderland have been punished by the Football Association for their conduct during the Tyne-Wear derby.

The Magpies have been hit with a £40,000 fine, while Sunderland will be forced to pay £20,000 after the North East clubs admitted a charge of failing to ensure that their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour.

The charge is in relation to an encounter between the Black Cats' James McClean and Newcastle's Danny Simpson.

Two Sunderland players were also sent off during the heated match, with Stephane Sessegnon given his marching orders for an elbow on Chiek Tiote and Lee Cattermole saw red minutes after the final whistle.

Managers Alan Pardew and Martin O'Neill had a slight altercation on the touchline during the clash, which ended 1-1 at the Sports Direct Arena.
