Danny Welbeck's first goal for England gives Roy Hodgson's side the lead at the break against Belgium.

Danny Welbeck's first goal in an England shirt has given the Three Lions a one-goal advantage at the break in their international friendly against Belgium this afternoon.

The Manchester United striker's goal actually came against the run of play against a Belgium side who controlled large parts of possession, without calling Joe Hart into any telling action.

England debutant Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had the first two chances of the match from similar positions on the edge of the area. However, the Arsenal youngster sent both his efforts off target.

Belgium's first chance was also from distance when Alex Witsel fired over in the 23rd minute.

The deadlock was eventually broken with 36 minutes on the clock. Captain Steven Gerrard won possession in midfield and found Ashley Young, who in turn slotted the ball through for Welbeck. The 21-year-old beat the Belgium offside trap before lifting the ball over an outrushing Simon Mignolet in the away goal.

Gerrard had two chances to double his side's advantage in stoppage time, but both were blocked by Belgian defenders, while up the other end Chelsea's latest signing Eden Hazard forced Hart into a save from 25 yards out.
