Preview: Plymouth Argyle vs. Charlton Athletic - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's EFL Trophy clash between Plymouth Argyle and Charlton Athletic, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

A place in the next round of the 2022-23 EFL Trophy is up for grabs on Tuesday when Plymouth Argyle play host to Charlton Athletic at Home Park.

Both teams head into the clash having failed to come out on top in their respective most recent outings, and they will be looking to get back on track here.

Match preview

Plymouth Argyle had to make do with a share of the spoils for the second game in a row thanks to a 2-2 stalemate against Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.

Steven Schumacher's men fell behind to Bobby Kamwa's opener in the final knockings of the first half before goals from Ryan Hardie and Bali Mumba turned the game on its head, only for Adrian Mariappa to restore parity in stoppage time.

Having picked up 43 points from a possible 57 this term, the Pilgrims remain top of the League One table, two points clear of nearest challengers Ipswich Town.

Their next challenge sees them go up against an opposing side with just three wins in the most recent 10 meetings between the teams, losing six of them.

Currently on a 10-game winning run on their own patch, Tuesday's hosts have turned their home ground into a real fortress and will certainly take some stopping in this one.

Charlton Athletic were beaten for the first time in six matches across all competitions as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Port Vale at Vale Park on Sunday.

Following a drab opening 45 minutes, Daniel Butterworth popped up with the only goal of the game in the 57th minute to put Ben Garner's men to the sword.

Consequently, the Addicks have dropped to 10th place in the League One standings, four points adrift of the last playoff spot albeit having played a game more.

Tuesday's visitors now set out to put their dwindling league form behind them and secure a third cup victory in a row off the back of recent success in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Team News

Plymouth's Ryan Hardie has found the back of the net in each of his last two substitute appearances and could be handed a starting spot here.

James Wilson was absent from the hosts' last outing, but the veteran defender is expected to return to the starting lineup for Tuesday's contest.

Jesuran Rak-Sakyi is one to keep an eye on here having made a real impression with five goals and two assists for Charlton Athletic since joining on loan from Crystal Palace.

Twenty-four-year-old Charlie Kirk scored twice for the away side in their most recent outing on the road, and he will be looking to deliver the goods once again.

Plymouth Argyle possible starting lineup:
Cooper; Galloway, Wilson, Lonwijk; Mumba, Houghton, Randell, Edwards; Ennis, Whittaker; Hardie

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Maynard-Brewer; Sessegnon, Inniss, Lavelle, Clare; Blackett-Taylor, Fraser, Dobson, Rak-Sakyi; Kirk, Stockley

We say: Plymouth Argyle 2-1 Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic are the more in-form side coming into this one, but Plymouth's recent record on home turf is simply too good to overlook. We anticipate a fairly even contest with the home team narrowly emerging victorious in the end.
