Preview: Plymouth Argyle vs. Wycombe Wanderers - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Thursday's League One clash between Plymouth Argyle and Wycombe Wanderers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

League One leaders Plymouth Argyle will try to claim a third consecutive league victory when they welcome Wycombe Wanderers to Home Park on Thursday.

Like their hosts, Wycombe are also in impressive form, and they will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to five matches.

Plymouth are currently sat at the summit of the League One table after losing only one of their last 19 league matches.

In their most recent outing, the Pilgrims claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Cheltenham Town thanks to a 78th-minute winner from Morgan Whittaker.

As a result of the victory, Steven Schumacher's side are two points clear of second-placed Ipswich Town, while they are four points better off than Sheffield Wednesday, who reside in third position.

Plymouth will be confident of at least maintaining their lead at the top after winning 10 of their 11 home league games.

Impressively, the Pilgrims have scored at least two goals in eight of their 11 league matches at Home Park, while they have also kept five home clean sheets in League One this season.

Meanwhile, Wycombe are currently sat in seventh place, with only goal difference preventing them from occupying a playoff position.

The Chairboys are currently enjoying a four-match unbeaten run, and they have the chance to claim a third consecutive victory on Thursday.

After claiming a narrow 1-0 victory over Ipswich, Wycombe came from behind to beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 on Boxing Day thanks to goals from David Wheeler and Lewis Wing.

That result extended Wycombe's unbeaten home league run to five matches, but they will now head on their travels for a tricky fixture against the league leaders.

Although Gareth Ainsworth side lost to Plymouth earlier in the season, they did win three straight meetings against the Pilgrims prior to that defeat.

Team News

Wycombe Wanderers' manager Gareth Ainsworth celebrates after the match on May 8, 2022© Reuters

Plymouth will be without the services of Brendan Galloway and Finn Azaz due to injury issues, while James Bolton has returned to full training, but Thursday's game will come too soon for the defender.

After recording a narrow 1-0 win over Cheltenham, Schumacher could be tempted to name an unchanged lineup for Thursday's contest.

Niall Ennis will continue to lead the line for the hosts, and the 23-year-old will be looking to add to the seven league goals that he has scored this season.

As for the visitors, Curtis Thompson returned from injury to make his first appearance since February as a late substitute against Bristol Rovers.

Thompson will be joined on the bench by Chris Forino-Joseph, who also came back into the matchday squad on Boxing Day following a spell on the sidelines.

Brandon Hanlan dropped out of the starting lineup on Monday, but he could replace Sam Vokes up front for the away meeting with Plymouth.

Plymouth Argyle possible starting lineup:
Cooper; Lonwijk, Scarr, Gillesphey; Edwards, Randell, Butcher, Mumba; Whittaker, Mayor, Ennis

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Stryjek; McCarthy, Grimmer, Tafazolli, Obita, Wing, Scowen; Mehmeti, Wheeler, McCleary; Hanlan

We say: Plymouth Argyle 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe may be unbeaten in four league games, but they will face a Plymouth side who have won 10 of their 11 home league matches this season, and we think that the Pilgrims will continue their impressive home form by claiming another victory on Thursday.
