The 22-year-old joined the Shrews from Accrington Stanley in the summer of 2011 and scored 10 goals in his maiden season.
However, he has featured on a less regular basis since Town's promotion to League One and has yet to find the net this campaign.
Gornell could make his Rochdale debut this weekend when they travel to Wycombe Wanderers.
