James McClean admits that it was "great" to secure victory for Martin O'Neill's first match in charge at Sunderland.

James McClean has revealed his delight in making his Sunderland debut for Martin O'Neill's first game in charge at the North East club.

The 22-year-old came on with 15 minutes remaining to help his team clinch a 2-1 victory over Steve Kean's side yesterday.

"I was delighted to get on for my debut and the fact the team won made it even better," McClean told the club's official website. "I managed to get a good cross in with pretty much my first touch which Seb nearly scored from, so that was good for my confidence.

"I really enjoyed it out there. It just feels good to be involved. But I know it's only one game and I have keep working hard and hopefully get a start.

"It's a great feeling in the changing room. The boys are buzzing. It was great to win the manager's first game in charge. The atmosphere was incredible out there - the fans were superb."

O'Neill's second game as manager of the Black Cats will be away to Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday.
