Bastian Schweinsteiger eyes Champions League defence

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger sets his sights on creating even more history in 2014 by helping his side retain the Champions League title.

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has set his sights on helping his side become the first club to successfully defend the Champions League title.

No side have managed to retain Europe's premier competition since the format changed from the European Cup in 1992, but Bayern are once again among the favourites this campaign having picked up the trophy for a fifth time last May.

The German champions enjoyed their most successful year ever in 2013, but Schweinsteiger is already looking forward to creating even more history in 2014.

"My priority right now is achieving something with Bayern Munich which has never been done before, and that is defending our Champions League title. I think we've got a very good, settled and established team," PA quotes Schweinsteiger as saying.

Bayern are on course for another substantial trophy haul this season as they lead the Bundesliga table by seven points and are in the domestic cup quarter-finals, having already won the European Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

They will face Arsenal in the last 16 of the Champions League.
