Danny Murphy: 'Rafael Benitez will struggle at Real Madrid'

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that Rafael Benitez will find it hard as the new head coach at Real Madrid.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that Rafael Benitez will struggle to succeed at Real Madrid.

The Spanish coach was unveiled as Carlo Ancelotti's successor on Wednesday after agreeing a three-year contract with the La Liga giants.

Murphy, who worked with Benitez briefly during his spell in charge of Liverpool, believes that the 54-year-old will find it hard to get Real's players on his side if his direct management style has not changed.

"My gut feeling is it might end in tears, just with the type of players and egos he is dealing with at Real Madrid," the former England international told talkSPORT.

"My understanding of him all those years ago, the type of personality he is, he is going to have to eat a bit of humble pie and bite his tongue at times with the type of squad he has inherited.

"The lads I spoke to for many years after [I left], the likes of Carra [Jamie Carragher], Stevie [Gerrard], they were always respectful of him because he knew his football, he knew how to organise, and the results showed that. He knows his football, but it was his way or the highway most of the time."

Benitez managed Liverpool between 2004 and 2010.
