Liverpool are reportedly drawing up plans to strengthen a key position when the transfer window reopens in the new year.

Liverpool have reportedly made plans to sign a new midfielder in the January window.

Reds sporting director Richard Hughes has just completed his first transfer window after starting his position in June.

Hughes experienced frustration for large parts of the summer, before he managed to make a couple of additions in the closing stages of the window.

They completed the signing of Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili before they loaned him straight back to the Spanish club for the rest of the 2024-25 season.

The Reds also bolstered their attacking options with the addition of Italy international Federico Chiesa, who ended his four-year stint with Juventus to complete a £10m to Anfield.

However, they ultimately failed in their bid to strengthen their engine room after they saw a proposed move for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi fall through.

The Spain international looked set to join the Merseyside club before he opted to stay with his boyhood side in La Liga.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are already planning to bring in a new number six when the transfer window reopens in January.

The report suggests that Liverpool will take their time to assess potential options before they draw up a shortlist of midfield targets.

Who are Liverpool's current number six options?

While they are keen to bring in a number six in January, Liverpool will have to make do with their current options for the first half of the season.

Ryan Gravenberch has been utilised in a deeper role in Liverpool's first two matches of the season, and he now has the opportunity to make that position his own before the transfer market reopens in January.

Alex Mac Allister can play as a number six when required, while Wataru Endo remains an option despite being linked with a move away in the summer.

However, they can no longer call upon Spanish midfielder Stejan Bajcetic after he completed a move to Red Bull Salzburg on the final day of the transfer window.
