Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti says that Toni Kroos must decide whether he wants to sign a new contract at Bernabeu.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has said that it is up to Toni Kroos to decide whether he wants to sign a new contract with the Spanish and European champions.

The 32-year-old has again been a vital player for Los Blancos at the start of this season, making 10 appearances in all competitions, providing two assists in the process.

Kroos's current deal at Bernabeu is due to expire next June, though, and there has been speculation surrounding his future over the last few weeks.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is believed to be keen to bring the German to the Etihad Stadium, and as it stands, he would be free to hold talks with foreign clubs at the start of 2023.

Ancelotti, speaking ahead of Saturday's La Liga clash with Getafe, has said that Real Madrid want to keep hold of the midfielder, and it will be up to him to decide whether he wants to pen an extension.

"Kroos is very well, physically and mentally, he always has a smile on his face, he never gets angry, he never feels the pressure. I think it's very strange, I ask him if he's not nervous and he says no," Ancelotti told reporters on Friday. "The renewal is in his hands, if he wants to renew, all Real Madrid will be happy."

In a recent interview with OMR, Kroos said that he was not currently considering leaving Los Blancos despite his contract situation.

"I know that in these eight years he (Real Madrid president Florentino Perez) has not thought for a second about selling me. At that time I came for 'only' €25m, surely he could have sold me later for more money," he said.

"I have an excellent relationship with the club, I have grown very fond of it. The president, the team, the fans... so I won't leave either."

Kroos also spoke of his close relationship with Perez: "I'm very close to him, he's a good-hearted person. From the first day he gave me the feeling that he was happy that I was coming to his club, which is unusual for the size of a club like Real Madrid."

The German has made 375 appearances for Real Madrid in all competitions since his arrival from Bayern Munich in 2014, winning three La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns during a highly-successful period.

Kroos is in the squad for his side's league game with Getafe on Saturday, but Karim Benzema has been rested, while Thibaut Courtois and Dani Ceballos are on the sidelines through injury.

"We remember the struggles we had in this fixture last season. Getafe haven't started so well, but they have been a solid team for a while and they always play with intensity and good organisation. They don't give you much space. It's not easy to win there, but we're confident," Ancelotti told reporters.

Real Madrid will enter this weekend's contest off the back of a 2-1 victory over Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
