Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins believes that effect Roman Abramovich has had on the English game has made the national team worse.

Former Chelsea assistant boss Ray Wilkins believes that the arrival of Roman Abramovich into the English game has had negative consequences for the national team.

The Russian billionaire arrived as the new owner of Chelsea back in 2003 and subsequently turned them into one of the biggest teams in Europe with his lavish spending.

Wilkins told The Sun: "As far as our product, he's changed it for the better.

"For our England team, for the worse. Unfortunately the influx of foreign players over the last 10 years has been such that our young players are not getting an opportunity."

Wilkins served as an assistant at Chelsea for two years from 2008 to 2010.
