Virgil van Dijk has insisted that Liverpool players are not thinking about the club's eight-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League.

James Milner scored an injury-time penalty against Leicester City on Saturday to extend Liverpool's winning record to 17 league games.

The following day, Manchester City suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers, leaving Pep Guardiola's men eight points off the pace in second.

Speaking to Sky Sports News about Liverpool's perfect start, Van Dijk said: "So far we have been getting the points.

"There is always room for improvement in our game. And I think we should just focus on all the games ahead of us and don't look at any gaps or points or difference between us and the others, including City.

"There are a lot of busy periods coming up as well with December and January and anything can happen still."

Liverpool famously had the opportunity to stretch their lead to 10 points when they travelled to the Etihad in January, only to lose 2-1 and eventually miss out on the title by one point.

The two sides will meet again when Jurgen Klopp's side host City at Anfield on November 10.
