England striker Wayne Rooney says that his sending off against Montenegro last month was his fault, but that the ban is harsh.

Wayne Rooney has said that he has no-one to blame but himself for his red card in England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro last month.

The striker was given a three-match ban by UEFA after he had kicked Miodrag Dzudovic during the 2-2 draw.

The suspension means that the 26-year-old will miss all of England's group games in next year's tournament.

"Obviously, it's devastating for me but it's something that's my own fault, so I can't really complain," said Rooney.

"It was stupid by me - I regretted it as soon as I did it. It's no excuse, but I still feel the punishment is a bit harsh. I'm disappointed with it."

Rooney also said that he and the Football Association will make a decision whether to appeal the decision.

"All the details we have been waiting on have come through, so we'll be making a decision as to whether we will be appealing," he added.

"Even if it's reduced by one game, it will be a bonus for me."

The FA have until 5pm on Friday to make their decision.
