Manchester United are reportedly wary of offering midfielder Paul Pogba a lucrative new contract, after their situation with goalkeeper David de Gea.

Manchester United will reportedly take caution when holding discussions with midfielder Paul Pogba over a new contract.

The Frenchman, who is entering the final year of his current deal, has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, with the Ligue 1 club prepared to make an official offer for him this summer.

According to The Athletic, United are wary against offering Pogba a lucrative new contract, after their situation with goalkeeper David de Gea.

In 2019, the Spaniard was handed a long-term £375,000-a-week deal that made him not only the highest-paid player at the club, but also in the Premier League.

Officials at the club believe that offering De Gea – whose form has declined over the last few years – such an enormous wage package was a mistake, and not only do his earnings now weigh heavily on the club's finances, but negotiations with other first-team players have become complicated.

Players and their agents also believe that they deserve to be earning as much as De Gea if they are performing on a more consistent basis for the club and playing regularly in the first team.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to be keen to see Pogba stay, but the midfielder, who has made 199 appearances for United since rejoining from Juventus in 2016, is now considering a fresh challenge away from Old Trafford.
