Preview: Wrexham vs. Yeovil Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's FA Cup clash between Wrexham and Yeovil Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Sixth-tier Yeovil Town will attempt to pull off an FA Cup upset when they face Wrexham in Sunday's second-round tie.

Wrexham have lost one of their previous 14 matches, while their non-league opponents are winless in their last three outings.

Although Wrexham have lost just once since September, that sole defeat did take place earlier this month in an away meeting with Accrington Stanley.

Rather than letting that result derail their promotion bid, Wrexham immediately got back on track with a dominant 6-0 victory over Morecambe.

They were seemingly on course to pick up another win in midweek when they established a two-goal advantage against Harrogate Town, but their opponents ultimately fought back to ensure that the contest finished all square, leaving the Welsh side in second place after 20 matches.

While Wrexham's main priority will be to secure back-to-back promotions, they will be hoping to progress to the third round of the FA Cup for the second season in a row.

Having won eight of their last nine matches (D1), the Red Dragons will certainly be heavy favourites to beat their non-league opponents on Sunday.

Yeovil may have been in the same division as Wrexham last year, but there is now a decent gap between the two sides after the two sides experienced contrasting fortunes last season.

While Wrexham won the National League with a record points tally, Yeovil suffered the disappointment of relegation after they finished 10 points adrift of safety.

After enduring a difficult 2022-23 campaign, Yeovil are enjoying better fortunes this term, with the Glovers currently leading the way in the National League South after winning 13 of their 19 league matches (D3, L3).

Despite sitting six points clear of the chasing pack, they have experienced a slight dip in results in their last three matches, losing to Torquay United in the FA Trophy, before playing out a draw with Chippenham Town and falling to a heavy 4-1 against Welling United.

Like Sunday's hosts, Yeovil will have the chance to reach the third round for the second straight season after they negotiated a round-one tie against National League Gateshead.

Team News

Wrexham defender Aaron Hayden celebrates scoring against Manchester United on July 25, 2023© Reuters

Wrexham will be without the services of Ryan Barnett, Eoghan O'Connell, Jordan Tunnicliffe, and Steven Fletcher due to injury.

Arsenal loanee Arthur Okonkwo will have to be assessed after the goalkeeper was forced off in Tuesday's draw with Harrogate Town.

Parkinson could be tempted to freshen up his side by bringing James Jones and Sam Dalby into the starting lineup.

As for Yeovil, they have reported no fresh injury issues, although they are still unable to call upon Jamie Sendles-White.

Despite conceding four goals against Welling, Yeovil boss Mark Cooper is expected to keep faith with a back four of Michael Smith, Morgan Williams, Jake Wannell and Alex Whittle.

After dropping down to the bench last weekend, Rhys Murphy is set to return to the lineup, where he will partner Frank Nouble in the front two.

Wrexham possible starting lineup:
Howard; Mendy, Hayden, Tozer, O'Connor, McClean; Jones, Evans, Lee; Dalby, Mullin

Yeovil Town possible starting lineup:
Day; Smith, Williams, Wannell, Whittle; Young, Worthington, Lo-Everton, Dawes; Murphy, Nouble

We say: Wrexham 3-1 Yeovil Town

Wrexham have won eight of their last nine home matches, and we think that they will make full once of home advantage to claim a routine win and seal their place in the FA Cup third round.
