Doncaster Rovers 3-4 Portsmouth - Doncaster relegated

Doncaster Rovers are relegated from the Championship to League One.

Doncaster Rovers have been relegated from the Championship after losing out in a seven-goal game at the Keepmoat this afternoon.

The home side got off to a lightning start and were two up after just five minutes.

First, Habib Beye met James Coppinger's free kick with a looping header that Jamie Ashdown misjudged, watching it go over his head and under the bar before Ashdown saved a Chris Brown effort, only to see it drop to Fabien Robert who swept home.

The impressive Coppinger almost made it three after just seven minutes by smashing the underside of the crossbar from 18 yards.

Pompey almost got one back minutes later but Luke Varney poked over from six yards as the visitors knew they had to do something to try to avoid relegation.

They earned a penalty five minutes after the break after Beye brought down Dave Kitson, a challenge for which he was dismissed. Greg Halford stepped up and coolly slotted the ball home to pull a goal back.

The visitors were awarded a second spot kick after a handball in the area which Halford again dispatched to give the travelling south coast fans hope.

However, this was soon extinguished by Coppinger, who cut inside from the right and buried past Ashdown.

Pompey were staring in the faces of relegation but snatched a late equaliser to instead send their opponents down.

Dave Kitson seemed to impede the Donny keeper before putting in but the goal was allowed and the visitors went on to compound Rovers' misery in added time as substitute Marko Futacs smashed home.

The win renders Portsmouth safe for another week at least, while Donny are now an insurmountable 12 points from safety.
