Manchester United have reportedly been told that they will have to meet a £40m buy-out clause in order to sign Marco Reus.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder is thought to be at the top of David Moyes's wishlist for the January transfer window.
According to the Daily Mail, the 24-year-old had a £29.4m clause in his contract up until last summer, but the departure of Mario Gotze led to the Bundesliga side increasing the fee.
The price would break the club's current record transfer fee, which saw Dimitar Berbatov move to Old Trafford for £30.75m in September 2008.
