Violent scenes embarrass Newcastle

Newcastle United reveal that they are "embarrassed and appalled" by the actions of some of their supporters yesterday afternoon.

Newcastle United have vowed to ban the supporters who were involved in violent scenes following the conclusion of yesterday afternoon's Tyne-Wear derby for life.

A total of 27 arrests were made after fans clashed with police in Newcastle city centre.

Having worked in conjunction with the authorities to help identify the culprits, the Magpies have revealed that they will hand out strict punishments.

"We were embarrassed and appalled by the behaviour of a minority of so-called fans who last night were involved in disturbances and disorder in Newcastle city centre after the match," read a statement on the club's official website.

"Newcastle United have been working with Northumbria Police, and will continue to do so, in order to identify all of the individuals concerned. The club will take the strongest possible action against those involved in the disturbances and will impose immediate lifetime bans on all those found guilty.

"These deplorable individuals have no place at Newcastle United and bring shame on the club and the vast majority of its proper, law-abiding fans."

Meanwhile, the chief superintendent of Northumbria Police has vowed to "lock up" the guilty parties.
