Rafael Benitez says that Chelsea planned to stop the threat of Leighton Baines during their win over Everton.

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that his side targeted Leighton Baines during their win over Everton on Sunday.

The Blues picked up a 2-1 win at Goodison Park after a Frank Lampard brace cancelled out a Steven Pienaar opener.

Ramires was deployed on the right of midfield for the European champions to combat the link-up between Baines and Pienaar, and Benitez is happy with the way his plan went.

"We knew that Baines could be very dangerous so we put Ramires on the left to control him," said Benitez. "Ramires did a great job for us.

"I'm really pleased because you could see the character of the players as we weren't in the game for the first 20 minutes. I was really pleased with the performance of the team.

"You could see [Everton] were pushing until the end."

Chelsea next host Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday.
