Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has advanced into round three of the Madrid Open after a 6-2 7-6 victory over Ryan Harrison.
Tsonga, the fourth seed, started the match in impressive form and broke his American opponent early on to move 3-1 ahead in the set.
Harrison recovered, but Tsonga broke once more to claim the opening set 6-2 with a powerful forehand.
The second set was a much more even contest, with Harrison more than holding his own against Tsonga's powerful strokes.
It remained on serve until 6-6, but it was Tsonga who dominated the tie-break, securing the victory with a typical powerful drive.
He will play Alexandr Dolgopolov in round three.
