Lionel Messi rescues Barcelona with late winner

Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid in their Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg thanks to Lionel Messi's late winner.

Lionel Messi was the hero for Barcelona as his 85th-minute goal salvaged a 1-0 win for Luis Enrique's side in the Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg against Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou this evening.

Barcelona flew out of the blocks and could have been ahead inside five minutes had Madrid's stand-in goalkeeper Jan Oblak not been able to tip Neymar's long-range strike around the post.

However, the away side were a constant threat on the break, and saw two golden opportunities to take the lead pass them by in the first half.

The first came when Fernando Torres collected Koke's pass, only to see his effort deflect off Gerard Pique and out for a corner.

Then Antoine Griezmann should have done better with Guilherme Siqueira's cross, but he could only head over the bar.

It was Barcelona that should have opened the scoring 10 minutes before half time when Ivan Rakitic's defence-splitting through-ball found Luiz Suarez, but the Uruguayan striker somehow volleyed over the top of Oblak's goal from inside six yards.

The second half began with Barcelona in control, but there was little in the way of goalmouth action until Andres Iniesta sent an effort straight at Oblak in the 75th minute.

With time running out and a draw looking inevitable, Barcelona were awarded a penalty when Juanfran felled Sergio Busquets in the box.

Messi's spot kick was then spectacularly saved by Oblak, but the Barcelona forward reacted quickest to prod home the rebound and seal a dramatic win.
