Liverpool winger Stewart Downing expresses his desire to remain at the club this summer, but the 28-year-old admits that manager Brendan Rodgers will have the final say.

Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has expressed his desire to remain at the club this summer.

However, the 28-year-old admits that boss Brendan Rodgers will have the final say.

Rodgers placed Downing on the transfer list in November, but injuries to teammates then provided an opportunity for the England international to convince his manager to have a change of heart.

"That's football for you," said Downing. "Me and the manager have always had open conversations and I found it difficult at the start of the season because I didn't play, it wasn't that I wasn't playing well.

"Once I got in the team and had a run of games my form picked up and I think the team got better and better and we've had some good results, especially after Christmas.

"There have been some positive signs and personally I'd like to stay but that is the manager's decision."

Downing has made 27 Premier League appearances this season, scoring three goals.
