Steven Davis hopeful of Michael O'Neill stay

Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis suggests that he would like to see Michael O'Neill stay on as manager of the national team.

Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis has suggested that he would like Michael O'Neill to stay on as manager of the national team.

O'Neill, who took charge of the side at the end of 2011, will be out of contract after Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Israel in Tel Aviv.

However, the 44-year-old is currently in talks with the Irish Football Association over a new deal.

"I suppose I can only speak for myself but I've enjoyed working with Michael and I feel we're not far away from being a decent side," Sky Sports News quotes Davis as saying.

"We feel we are on the right path and hopefully the experience gained in this campaign will stand us in good stead for the next Euros."

Irish FA president Jim Shaw recently gave his backing for O'Neill to continue in the role.
