Edin Dzeko came close to giving City the lead, but his low drive from the edge of the box was pushed wide by David Marshall.
Marshall was quickly called into action again to stop Ben Turner from putting the ball into his own net.
The hosts soon made their pressure count, and took the lead in the 14th minute of the match. David Silva made his way into the box and pulled the ball back to Dzeko, who saw his scuffed effort cross the line.
Alvaro Negredo should have added to their lead, but after latching onto a ball over the top, he poked an effort wide.
Against the run of play the visitors equalised, as Craig Noone burst into the box, and took the ball past Vincent Kompany, before drilling a low shot into the bottom corner past Joe Hart.

The goal stung City back into life, and they immediately retook the lead. Dzeko mishit a shot on the edge of the box, but it fell kindly for Navas to slot the ball past Marshall.
In the second half Silva nearly scored the home side's third, after collecting the ball from Negredo in the box, but fired narrowly wide of the far post.
Cardiff were still posing City a threat and Noone came close to scoring his second of the match when he picked up the ball inside his own half and made his way to the edge of the area, before seeing Joe Hart save his powerful effort.
In the 76th minute, Yaya Toure restored the home side's two-goal lead, as he made his way to the edge of the area, and exchanged passes with Sergio Aguero, before slotting a low effort past Marshall.
Three minutes later they made sure of the points, as Aguero burst into the box, before firing a strike into the back of the net.
Fraizer Campbell scored a late consolation for Cardiff in injury time when he slotted home following a corner kick, but it came too late to make an impact, as City held on to the win.
