Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says that Fred made "his breakthrough" for Manchester United in their 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has claimed that Fred made "his breakthrough" for Manchester United in their 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Fred has struggled since arriving at United from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer, but injuries to the likes of Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic, in addition to Paul Pogba's suspension, saw the Brazilian start in Paris.

The £50m midfielder was impressive in United's shock victory in the French capital, which saw the 20-time English champions advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League on away goals.

Interim boss Solskjaer has said that the 26-year-old's performance 'showed why United had signed him'.

"Fred - that was probably his breakthrough for us. You can see why we've signed him. He's got the mentality of a Brazilian international - he is a Brazilian international," Sky Sports News quotes Solskjaer as saying.

"He gets on the ball, no fear, no doubt whatsoever. We played a system today that he used to play at Shakhtar."

Marcus Rashford's stoppage-time penalty ultimately sent United into the quarter-finals of the European Cup.
