Michael Carrick: 'Manchester United signings add variety to midfield'

Michel Carrick has insisted that each midfield player at Manchester United can "bring something different" to the mix, as competition for places steps up.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has insisted that he still has a big part to play at the club this season.

The England international is thought to be a target for a number of clubs, after the Red Devils strengthened their options with the double capture of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Despite seeing competition for a starting place intensify, Carrick is confident that each player can add their own qualities to the mix as United aim to mount a title charge.

"The manager's made some great signings but we are all slightly different," he told Sky Sports News. "We all bring something different to the midfield. We can compliment each other and work together well.

"We've started well. Myself and Morgan have played a couple of games and Basti's had a couple of games. Shame he's picked up a bit of a niggle but we know what he brings.

"He's an immense player and will have an immense influence on us going forward. We should be challenging for the top and haven't done that for the last couple of years and it's been hugely disappointing."

Man United beat Barcelona 3-1 in their latest pre-season outing on Saturday.
