World number five David Ferrer advances at the Sony Open in Miami at the expense of Italy's Fabio Fognini.

Spain's number two David Ferrer has reached round four of the Miami Open thanks to a 6-1 7-5 victory over Fabio Fognini earlier today.

Ferrer made very few unforced errors during the opening set, while his Italian opponent struggled to land in his first service.

As a result, it took Ferrer just under 30 minutes to open up a one-set advantage thanks to a 6-1 success.

The second set was much more evenly contested, but it was 30-year-old Ferrer who recorded the decisive break to book his place in the next round of the competition.

Ferrer will now take on Japan's Kei Nishikori for a slot in the quarter-finals.
