Arsene Wenger: 'Mesut Ozil over penalty miss'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that Mesut Ozil is now over his missed penalty in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Bayern Munich.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has expressed his belief that Mesut Ozil has got over his missed penalty in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Bayern Munich.

Ozil saw a spot kick saved in the early stages of the Gunners' eventual 2-0 defeat to Bayern at the Emirates Stadium, with the miss proving to be a major turning point in the match.

The 25-year-old was subsequently rested by Wenger before returning to the side and scoring in Arsenal's 4-1 FA Cup win over Everton on Saturday.

Wenger has acknowledged that the miss affected the club's record signing, but believes that he has now recovered from it and backed him to prove his quality in Tuesday's return leg.

"I think it affected him mentally too much, the penalty he missed against Bayern. It was not only physical, it was mental," Wenger is quoted as saying by PA.

"He had the feeling he let the team down at a very important moment of the game, that affected his performance very much. Psychologically sometimes the wound is like a physical one.

"You can talk and talk and talk, but it takes time. You just have to leave it to time. I think he is over it. He has a good opportunity to show on Tuesday night how good he is."

Arsenal will face Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup semi-finals in April, while they are also still in the Premier League title race.
