Steven Naismith scored his first hat-trick for Everton to lead the side to a 3-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League this afternoon.

The Scottish international came off the bench after an early injury to Muhamed Besic, scoring twice in the space of five minutes before the break.

Nemanja Matic kept the champions in contention at half time, but Naismith added his third inside the final 10 minutes to seal the win for the home side.

Good morning! In around an hour Everton will be hoping that they can become the third side this season to beat currently champions Chelsea, as they host Jose Mourinho's side at Goodison Park this afternoon. The team news has just been published, so let's take a look at the lineups.

EVERTON STARTING XI: Howard, Coleman, Jagielka, Stones, Galloway, Barry, McCarthy, Besic, Barkley, Kone, Lukaku

CHELSEA STARING XI: Begovic, Ivanovic, Zouma, Terry, Azpilicueta, Matic, Mikel, Fabregas, Hazard, Pedro, Costa

EVERTON SUBSTITUTES: Robles, Mirallas, Lennon, Naismith, Deulofeu, Osman, Funes Mori

CHELSEA SUBSTITUTES: Blackman, Falcao, Kenedy, Remy, Willian, Cahill, Loftus-Cheek

Roberto Martinez said that Aaron Lennon would make his second debut for the club after rejoining on a permanent deal on transfer deadline day. The winger is on the bench though, so seems certain to come on in the second half. There are two changes to the side that shared a goalless draw with Tottenham last time out, as Bryan Oviedo and Tom Cleverley both miss out with injury. Mohamed Besic and Brendan Galloway both come into the starting lineup for the hosts.

Chelsea are without Thibaut Courtois, who has been ruled out for three months with a knee injury, so Asmir Begovic comes in between the posts for the visitors. Captain John Terry is available again after serving his suspension, so takes the place of Gary Cahill, while Kurt Zouma continues. The only other change sees Willian drop to the bench, with John Obi Mikel coming into the starting lineup.

Aaron Lennon isn't the only Everton player in line to make his debut for the club this afternoon. Ramiro Funes Mori also joined the Toffees on transfer deadline day from River Plate. The Argentine international arrived back from duty with his national side later than some of his teammates, but the defender could get a run out this afternoon, particularly with Galloway and Coleman both recently missing time with injuries.

The visitors have plenty of youth on their bench this afternoon, including England Under-21 international Ruben Loftus-Cheek and 19-year-old Brazilian striker Kenedy, who featured for the first time off the bench in the 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace last time out.

Before the international break, it looked like John Stones would be heading to Chelsea towards the end of the transfer window, with the defender submitting a transfer request as the champions made three bids for England international. Had the move gone through, he could have been making his debut against his old club this afternoon, but Everton kept hold of him.

Neither of these two sides have been in the best of form at the start of the campaign. Everton have had a tricky start to the season, with matches against Tottenham and Man City in their first four fixtures. Their only win came at St Mary's, where they thrashed Southampton 3-0. Chelsea also have one win, narrowly beating West Brom 3-2 last month. Chelsea only lost three times all season as they won the title in the 2014-15 campaign, but a win for Everton this afternoon will see them match that total after just five fixtures.

Ahead of this match, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho told the club's website: "I'm not happy and I'm happy I'm not happy. If I'm happy losing matches it will be because I've changed a lot, and I don't want to change. I will work harder than ever. I'm optimistic, I trust the players and I know the players trust me. It's not such a hard situation because we feel that better results will arrive. It's not depressing, we are going to get out of this situation for sure."

Meanwhile, Roberto Martinez told the Everton website: "Facing Chelsea is going to be a really good challenge. We knew the start of the season was going to be very tough, with really difficult opponents in the first 10 fixtures. I felt that Chelsea were by far the best team in the division last season, so it's a great test for us to have that focus and concentration, and we know Goodison Park will be ready for a big occasion."

When these two sides played at Goodison Park last season it was goals galore, with Chelsea securing a 6-3 victory, including a hat-trick from Diego Costa. The Spaniard made an emphatic start to life at Chelsea, scoring seven times in his first four appearances for the club, but he's scored just once so far this season.

For Chelsea, this match comes just before the start of their Champions League campaign. The Premier League champions host Maccabi Tel Aviv on Wednesday. Everton have a week off after this tie, but will have a tricky trip to Martinez's old side Swansea City next weekend.

It's expected that Chelsea, and particularly Jose Mourinho, will be on the receiving end of some chanting and singing from the Goodison Park faithful this afternoon. While Stones was being linked with a move to Chelsea, Everton fans were chanting during a game against Barnsley in the League Cup about the Chelsea manager, while performing a rendition of The Beatles's 'Can't Buy Me Love' (replacing the word love with Stones) during the draw with Spurs last time out.

Here are the visitors making their way out to warm up ahead of this afternoon's match:

REFEREE WATCH! Andre Marriner will be the referee in charge of this match, and it will be the first time he has officiated a match involving either of these two sides this season. He had a busy day last time out though, handing out seven yellow cards and a red in Newcastle's defeat to Arsenal. Last time he sent off a player in a match involving Chelsea, it was in their 6-0 win over Arsenal in 2014, when he wrongly gave Kieran Gibbs his marching orders after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had handled the ball.

A plane has just been flown over Goodison Park displaying a banner which reads "Your failures are you legacy". Certain sections of the Everton supporters have been unhappy with the club's chairman Bill Kenwright at the start of this season. It's the second time such a protest has happened this season, with a plane also being hired for their match against Southampton last month. The players silenced the critics with a 3-0 win on that occasion though.

It's less than 15 minutes until kickoff now, so there's just time to watch the Sports Mole On The Sofa crew looking ahead to this fixture:

This is the first of seven matches taking place in the Premier League this afternoon, with five more matches coming up at 3pm, before the ever-fascinating tie between Manchester United and Liverpool later this evening. You can find previews for all of those matches here.

PREDICTION! The players will be making their way out for kickoff in the next couple of minutes, through a guard of honour to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. That leaves us with just enough time to make a prediction for this afternoon's game. Chelsea certainly haven't made the best start to the season, and losing their first-choice goalkeeper will be a blow. Everton will hope that they can get something from this, but the visitors should just have enough, so I'm going for a 2-1 Chelsea win.

The players make their way out ready for kickoff. Several fans have John Stones-themed banners, including one which simply reads "no means no Jose".

KICKOFF! The home side get the match underway.

Pedro tries to put Brendan Galloway under pressure straight away, sprinting down the left, while a ripple of applause goes around the ground as John Stones makes his first touch. Ivanovic manages to break down the right before crossing it into the Everton box, but it's easily claimed by Tim Howard.

Everton get forward for the first time, with Galloway slotting the ball forward for Muhamed Besic, who wins a corner as Zouma is forced to put it behind, but the Bosnia international has gone down with what looks like a hamstring injury.

CHANCE! Ross Barkley gets the ball in from the resulting corner, which Romelu Lukaku leaps up to meet. Asmir Begovic beats him to it, but the striker gets a bit of a shove on the keeper just to let him know that he's there. Meanwhile Besic is still behind the Chelsea goal receiving treatment on his leg.

Besic limps back on, but Steven Naismith is warming up, so it looks like he's going to be coming on shortly. Chelsea try to take advantage by pressing towards the Everton goal, but Eden Hazard's cross goes behind for a goal kick.

Besic tries to get forward again, but he's clearly struggling. He does get the ball to Barkley, who attempts to drive it in low from the edge of the area, but he drags it well wide.

SUB! Besic's day is done! The midfielder looks gutted as he limps off with a hamstring injury just nine minutes into the match. Steven Naismith is coming on.

Pedro and Ivanovic try to work the ball down the right for Chelsea, but Galloway gets back to put it behind for a corner. McCarthy clears the initial delivery before Fabregas lobs it back in, but Zouma can only head wide.

Coleman comes out from the back for Everton before passing to Barkley. The England international puts in the diagonal pass towards Naismith, who loses Ivanovic in the Chelsea box, but the substitute can't quite reach it in time.

Diego Costa gets the ball in the Everton area for the first time as Hazard picks out the striker. Jagielka quickly closes him down though, forcing the Spaniard to hesitate as he tried to turn towards goal, before allowing the defender to make the clearance.

GOAL! Everton 1-0 Chelsea (Steven Naismith)

Naismith has the ball 25 yards out, playing it outside to Brendan Galloway before slipping through the middle of the two Chelsea centre-backs. The defender crosses it back in for Naismith, and he leaps up high to nod it past Begovic off the underside of the crossbar. It's a superb header from the Scottish international.

CHANCE! That's certainly got the crowd going as well, as they start a chant of "you're getting sacked in the morning" towards Mourinho. Everton are soon charging forward again, with Coleman getting the cross in for Arouna Kone to try to head in at the far post, but Begovic just turned it behind.

CHANCE! Everton are in complete control as Coleman lurks on the edge of the box as the corner is taken. The initial delivery from Barkley is cleared, allowing the defender to try his luck with a 20-yard drive, but Begovic makes a diving save to keep it out.

GOAL! Everton 2-0 Chelsea (Steven Naismith)

Steven Naismith has struggled to get in Everton's starting lineup this season, but he's shown his worth since coming off the bench for the injured Mohamed Besic. It's a sublime solo effort as he wins the ball 25 yards out, taking a touch to round Zouma before unleashing a rocket into the bottom left corner.

CHANCE! A rendition of "can't buy you Stones" fills Goodison as Chelsea try to build some possession in Everton's half, but Jagielka and Stones are there to make sure Hazard and Matic can't get anything in the box. Ivanovic tries to bring it back down the right, before Hazard gets it across to Azpilicueta, who attempts to squeeze it past Stones, but he deflects it behind for a corner.

Everton are still having to defend as the visitors force another corner, but Gareth Barry gets it away. Romelu Lukaku sprints towards the opposition box as Everton go on the counter-attack, but his first touch is lacking as the high ball forward drops to the former Chelsea man, allowing the visitors to get numbers back, resulting in his shot going behind.

Here's confirmation that Steven Naismith has really been a super sub this afternoon:

John Stones is making some vital contributions at the back for Everton this afternoon. After deflecting Azpilicueta's effort behind moments earlier, he takes the ball away from Pedro this time as the summer signing attempts to chip it past the defender. Both sides' defenders have been getting forward so far in this first half, but Chelsea have looked vulnerable to the counter-attack, while Everton's back four have been able to get back and close the gaps.

Naismith is getting involved on the defensive side of the ball now as he diverts an Ivanovic cross behind for a corner. Pedro tries to head it in, but it's cleared as far as Costa, who can only send a rather weak ball back in, which is swiftly claimed by Howard.

Naismith and Ivanovic are starting to get involved in a few battles as Lukaku flicks the ball on to his teammate, who is on a hat-trick. Ivanovic forces him out to the edge of the box, before taking a tumble under apparent pressure from the striker. The referee gives the Chelsea defender the free kick, but it didn't look like there was all that much in it.

GOAL! Everton 2-1 Chelsea (Nemanja Matic)

From nowhere, Chelsea are right back in this match through one of the unlikeliest sources as Nemanja Matic hits a sensational strike from long range. He gets the ball over 30 yards out, taking a couple of touches before unleashing a flawless swerving effort into the top corner. He doesn't score many goals, but that was just phenomenal.

Chelsea are clearly sensing a chance to get back on level terms before the break as Eden Hazard skips into the box before seeing his effort deflected behind for a corner. From the resulting set piece, John Terry finds himself in space, attempting to head it back Tim Howard, but it's just a fraction high from the Chelsea captain.

The visitors are bearing down on the Everton goal again as Pedro passes the ball out wide to Ivanovic, who crosses it into the middle, but there's no-one there to meet it. Matic gets it back outside the box and tries his luck from distance again, but this time Barry is there to make the block.

It's been all Chelsea for the last 10 minutes, and they're on the attack again with Fabregas picking out Costa on the edge of the area. The Spaniard tries to hit it on the turn, but Stones does just enough to make sure it goes over. Chelsea have a corner as a result, which eventually drops for Hazard on the edge of the box, but his low strike is just wide of the post.

Costa pulls the ball back for Matic, who finds himself being closed down by Stones, so he backheels it towards Pedro, but Jagielka is first to the ball and boots it clear. Meanwhile, there are two minutes of stoppage time to be played before the players head off for half time, which surely can't come soon enough for Everton after Chelsea's resurgent finish to the first period.

Mourinho makes his way off a few moments early, but stops in his tracks as he sees Naismith beating Ivanovic into the box before crossing in towards Kone, but his header goes wide.

HALF TIME: Everton 2-1 Chelsea

An entertaining first half at Goodison Park comes to an end, with the home side still ahead thanks to a brace from substitute Steven Naismith. A stunning effort from Nemanja Matic has kept the visitors in contention though, with Chelsea enjoying the majority of the chances in the final 15 minutes of the half.

In the opening 45 minutes, Chelsea saw more of the ball for 59% of the possession. The champions also had more chances than their opponents, creating 11 chances, but just one was on target, while four of Everton's six were on target, including the two that resulted in Naismith's goals.

Almost inevitably, John Stones had a huge influence at the back for Everton in the first half. He's made numerous blocks and clearances to slow the Chelsea attack, while also getting forward a couple of times to cause problems down the other end. Despite having submitted a transfer request, the England international has received unwavering support from the Everton fans, and he's paying them back with another excellent 45 minutes of work.

Naismith has now scored against a Jose Mourinho-managed side in three separate Premier League games, becoming the first player to achieve such a landmark. He does appear to enjoy scoring against Chelsea.

The players are making their way back out ready for the start of the second half.

RESTART! Chelsea get the second half underway.

Chelsea are trying to resume where they left off in the first half, with Costa charging down the right flank, but Lukaku wins it back for the home side and goes on the counter before crossing the ball in for McCarthy, but Begovic comes out to make the clearance.

Zouma gets the ball back for the visitors before releasing Matic through the middle. Hazard eventually gets possession, looking for someone to make a run into the Everton box, but his teammates are too slow to come to his aid, allowing Barry to make the challenge for the hosts.

Matic launches a throw into the box from the sideline, leaving Zouma to get past Galloway before unleashing a shot on the turn, but it's blocked. The defender tries to win the ball back, but seems to turn awkwardly, and goes down clutching his right knee. He manages to limp to the sideline, but Gary Cahill is already warming up.

For now, Zouma seems able to continue as he gingerly jobs back onto the pitch at Goodison Park. Fabregas is on the attack for Chelsea, cutting the ball inside for Pedro, but the former Barcelona man wasn't expecting the ball, allowing Coleman to boot it away from danger for Everton.

SUB! John Terry is forced to turn the ball behind for a corner as Galloway makes a run forward. Barkley curls it back in, leaving Stones to take the shot on, but it goes well high. The visitors are making a change though, replacing John Obi Mikel with young Brazilian forward Kenedy.

The start of the second half certainly hasn't been as free-flowing or played at as high a tempo as in the first half, with both sides seeming quite cagey. The fourth goal in this match, should there be one, will be crucial, and both sides look more concerned with not conceding than pushing to score.

CHANCE! There's controversy as Romelu Lukaku thumps the ball towards the Chelsea goal from outside the box, forcing a save from Begovic. The keeper parries it clear before looking to leap on the loose ball, but Terry gets to it first, and taps it back to the keeper. Everton think that they should have a free kick inside the box for the back pass, but it looks like Mariner missed it, so the visitors get away with it.

Lukaku makes another run into the box, and once again has Terry for company, with the Chelsea captain forcing the striker out wide, leaving him to slice his finish behind for a goal kick. Barkley soon wins it back for the home side though, tearing through the middle before looking for Kone, but the striker appeared to think he could in danger of being offside, so slowed his run, allowing Zouma to clear.

Everton are starting to look like the side that scored twice in five minutes in the first half of this match as Kone does get on the end of a ball fowrard this time, but is unable to beat Begovic from a tight angle. Barkley takes it back into the box but loses his footing.

BOOKING! A late challenge from Brendan Galloway brings Pedro down. Mariner plays the advantage, resulting in Tim Howard tipping the ball behind for a corner, but the referee hasn't forgotten about the defender's actions, subsequently booking him.

Aaron Lennon is stood up on the Everton bench without his training top on. It looks like the winger is getting ready to make his second debut. Chelsea are trying to halt Everton's decent spell with a couple of runs at the home side's box, but they don't really seem to be clicking at the moment.

The determined Naismith dodges a couple of challenges before losing the ball to Ivanovic, who has to knock it behind for a corner, but Barkley's ball into the box is easily dealt with by Costa, who is back to help out in defence. Lukaku soon wins it back, but his low strike is straight at Begovic.

SUB! Chelsea are making their second change of the match, with Radamel Falcao replacing Pedro.

Everton have a corner, which Barkley takes short before getting it back from Barry, but Matic hits it clear. Costa quickly finds himself in space in the box as the visitors race down the other end on a quick counter-attack, but Jagielka closes him down, forcing it out for a corner. Both sides are starting to show a little more urgency now.

SUB! Arouna Kone hasn't quite been at the races this afternoon, so he makes way as Aaron Lennon returns following transfer deadline day move back to Goodison Park.

Mourinho is already preparing his next change as he gives instructions to Willian. In the mean time, Falcao and Hazard work together down the left, but Barkley is back to take it away from the Chelsea duo, finding Naismith in the middle before Coleman tries to cross it in for Lukaku, but it's too high for the Belgian international.

SUB! The visitors do make their last change of the game, with Cesc Fabregas making way for Willian.

There's a worry for Everton as Seamus Coleman has gone down holding his hamstring. He missed a match for the Republic of Ireland over the international break with tightness in the muscle.

SUB! Roberto Martinez obviously doesn't want to risk Coleman, who is still limping. He makes way for new signing Ramiro Funes Mori.

Willian looks to make his first contribution since coming of for Chelsea, getting forward before trying to send a low cross in for Falcao, but McCarthy is in the right place at the right time to make the clearance. Everton have almost everyone back as they look to make sure of the win.

Willian whips the ball in from a corner looking for Costa, but Naismith is back and gets is away from the penalty area. Hazard gathers it around 20 yards out and tries to keep the move alive, but Everton have too many players back.

GOAL! Everton 3-1 Chelsea (Steven Naismith)

It's a hat-trick for the Scottish international as Aaron Lennon plays the ball in from out wide on the left to Ross Barkley. The midfielder chips it in to Naismith, who holds off Zouma to slice it in from a tight angle, securing his first hat-trick in an Everton shirt just two days ahead of his 29th birthday.

Naismith obviously thinks he can score more as he races towards the Chelsea goal again, but is tripped from behind by William, giving the hosts a free kick around 25 yards out. The home supporters are singing "you're getting sacked in the morning" again.

BOOKING! John Stones picks up just the second yellow card of the afternoon as he kicks the ball away after Falcao had won a free kick for Chelsea.

Willian floats the ball in from the resulting free kick, but Costa is being too closely marked by Galloway, so can't get his head to it. Chelsea are still pressing, but they haven't worked well as a team throughout this second half, and they're looking no better now.

BOOKING! Cesar Azpilicueta is the first name in the referee's book from Chelsea as he clatters into Aaron Lennon as the winger looks to race away down the left flank again.

Looking at the replays of Steven Naismith's goals this afternoon, it's not just a hat-trick for the substitute, but a perfect hat-trick, with a left-footed strike, right-footed finish and a header. Not a bad day's work from the 28-year-old. Meanwhile, there are four minutes of stoppage time.

BOOKING! Ramiro Funes Mori comes out from the back, showing explosive pace through the middle, until he's hacked down by a rash challenge from Diego Costa, which earns the Spaniard his seemingly obligatory yellow card.

CHANCE! A high ball comes over the top, with Zouma and Terry both expecting the other to clear it, leaving Naismith preparing to volley in his fourth. Begovic races out to punch it clear though, catching the striker in the process, but he's soon back on his feet.

FULL TIME: Everton 3-1 Chelsea

Andre Mariner blows the full-time whistle, confirming an emphatic 3-1 win for Everton thanks to a Steven Naismith hat-trick. He clutches the ball tightly as he makes his way off the pitch.
Steven Naismith is congratulated by teammates after he completes his hat-trick against Chelsea on September 12, 2015© Getty Images

That result moves Everton up to third in the table, although the sides around them are yet to play this weekend. Chelsea slip to 15th, a whopping eight points adrift of leaders Manchester City, who face Crystal Palace later this afternoon.
