Sports Mole takes a closer look at Wednesday's goalless draw between Chelsea and Fulham in the Premier League.

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez would have hoped to have got his first win on the board on Wednesday night as his side hosted Fulham at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

The Spaniard, who was roundly booed by home fans in his first match in charge last weekend, was again given a sour reception before the Blues were held by their London neighbours in a woeful stalemate.

A chorus of jeers then greeted Benitez after the final whistle following a depressing display from the hosts at the Bridge.

Sports Mole takes a closer look at the 90 minutes between the two teams.

Match statistics:

Chelsea:

On target 13
Possession 53%
Corners 10
Fouls 10

Fulham:
Shots 8
On target 7
Possession 47%
Corners 2
Fouls 11

Was the result fair?

It certainly was. While Chelsea did most of the pressing, Fulham looked threatening on the break and had some decent opportunities to score. One thing for sure is that this won't be getting filed under 'Premier League classic' anytime soon.

Chelsea's performance

Toothless, weak, poor, lacking in attacking invention, one dimensional, ineffective, shoddy, uninspiring...

Fulham's performance

The Cottagers did what they were expected to do and that is defend, soak up pressure and hit their opponents on the counter attack. They occasionally looked sharp up front, but it was their dogged defending that was the most impressive facet of their display.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Aaron Hughes: The Fulham captain was an inspiration at the back as his team made themselves incredibly difficult to break down.

Biggest gaffe

John Arne Riise will be cursing himself for the chance that he missed midway through the second half. The Norwegian showed great control to give himself a sight at goal following Sascha Riether's ball over the top, but he somehow scuffed the ball before Chelsea cleared the danger.

Referee performance

Anthony Taylor had two penalty decisions to make at either end and did well to get them both right on what was a routine night for the official.

What next?

Chelsea: The Blues travel across London to West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday. Is it already a must-win match for Benitez?

Fulham: The Cottagers are also in Premier League action on Saturday when they entertain Tottenham Hotspur.
