Manchester City reportedly intend to make Zack Steffen their number-two goalkeeper next season.
While that position is currently held by Claudio Bravo, the Chile international is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium on a free transfer in the summer.
According to the Manchester Evening News, that will result in Steffen being given the opportunity to challenge Ederson.
The report suggests that the Premier League giants have been left impressed by the 24-year-old's performances during his time on loan at Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Although the USA international has recently suffered with a knee problem, a total 18 appearances have been made in all competitions.
City signed Steffen from Columbus Crew last summer - a transfer which is said to have cost in the region of £7m.
