Paul Merson expecting Jose Mourinho at Manchester United

Jose Mourinho will replace Louis van Gaal as head coach of Manchester United at the end of the season, according to former Arsenal striker Paul Merson.

Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has said that he fully expects Jose Mourinho to replace Louis van Gaal as Manchester United boss at the end of the 2015-16 season.

It had been claimed that Van Gaal would be retained for another campaign if the Dutchman could lead Man United to a top-four finish and FA Cup trophy this term.

However, Man United must beat Bournemouth and hope that Manchester City lose against Swansea City on Sunday to finish in a Champions League position in the Premier League table, which Merson does not believe is likely.

"I think that will be it, he will be gone. I think Jose Mourinho will be the next manager. If they want to get anywhere near where they want to be, they need to do it quickly, and there is no manager that can do things quickly like Mourinho," Merson told Sky Sports News.

"LVG has a year left, if you keep him for three months and he is not doing well then whoever comes in takes over a struggling team, that's no good."

Van Gaal is currently contracted to the Red Devils until the end of next season.
