Edwin van der Sar: 'I rejected Liverpool for a bigger challenge at Juventus'

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar reveals that he rejected the chance to join Liverpool as he desired a "bigger challenge" at Juventus.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has revealed that he rejected the chance to join Liverpool as he desired a "bigger challenge" at Juventus.

Van der Sar, who joined the Italian champions in 1999 from Ajax, also had a tour of Anfield with former Reds boss Gerard Houllier before choosing Juventus.

The Dutchman left the Old Lady in 2001 for Fulham, before signing for United in 2005 and winning four Premier League titles, two League Cups and the Champions League while at Old Trafford.

"When I left Ajax in 1999, I travelled to Liverpool and spoke to [Gerard] Houllier," Van der Sar told FourFourTwo.

"I was shown around Anfield and also met with the chairman and a couple of the players. I thought about it, but when Juventus came to the table I came to the conclusion that it would be a bigger challenge to play in Italy."

The 46-year-old left United in 2011 before the club signed current goalkeeper David de Gea.
