Manchester United have reportedly agreed a fee with Roma for centre-back Chris Smalling.

The 30-year-old spent last season on loan with the Serie A outfit, who have been keen to make the move permanent throughout the summer but have so far been unable to come to terms with his parent club United.

However, the Manchester Evening News reports that the two clubs have now agreed an initial fee of £13.6m which could rise as high as £18.1m including add-ons.

Smalling's potential switch to the Italian capital was thought to have collapsed earlier on deadline day, with Roma reportedly switching their attention to Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger.

The deal has now been revived, though, with the player himself having pushed for a permanent exit from Old Trafford.

United have already bolstered their defensive line on deadline day with Alex Telles arriving from Porto, while deals for Edinson Cavani and Facundo Pellistri are expected before the 11pm cut-off.
