Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani is urged to leave Manchester United in January by compatriot and former Premier League manager Gus Poyet.

Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani has been urged to leave Manchester United by compatriot and former Premier League manager Gus Poyet.

The 34-year-old signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford earlier this year, but since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, the South American has seemingly fallen down the pecking order.

Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur man Poyet, who played 26 times for the Uruguay national team, believes Ronaldo's arrival will have an effect on Cavani's game time and therefore feels he needs to leave in January.

"[Cavani] was unlucky, because without Ronaldo coming in, he was playing as [Man United's] main striker," Poyet told talkSPORT.

"The decision of Juventus, Manchester City getting involved, incredibly went against one person especially – and that was Cavani.

"Maybe he should move in January. From the outside, I don't know him, but if I was him, seeing how things are now, and seeing him not getting to 90 minutes for the national team because he's not playing – maybe."

Cavani – who has been linked with La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid – scored 17 times in 43 appearances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side across all competitions last season, however this campaign, the veteran striker has featured for just 119 minutes across four matches.
