David Ferrer has progressed to the quarter-finals of the US Open following a comfortable three-set victory over Richard Gasquet.

The 30-year-old got the better of the Frenchman 7-5 7-6(2) 6-4 at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday.

The match was interrupted for an hour because of rain when Ferrer was leading 4-3 in the final set, but that did not shake the Spaniard's confidence.

Ferrer will now face either Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic or Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany for a place in the semi-finals.
