No goals at The Valley

Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town share the points following a goalless draw at The Valley.

Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town have played to a goalless draw in their Championship meeting at The Valley this evening.

The home fans paid tribute to former manager Chris Powell, who was sacked earlier this week, by clapping throughout the third minute in recognition of the shirt number that he wore during his playing career.

Charlton came close to taking an early lead when Astrit Ajdarevic tried to blast the ball in from distance, but Alex Smithies was alert in the Huddersfield goal.

Nakhi Wells proved a threat for the visitors as he was denied from point-blank range while trying to slot in from a Sean Scannell cross, before the striker was denied a penalty after being brought down by Michael Morrison.

The home side made an attacking start to the second half as Marvin Sordell collected the ball from Callum Harriott before running back into the visitors' area and unleashing a strike, but he just missed the target.

However, they almost gifted Huddersfield the opening goal moments later when a defensive mix-up allowed Scannell a free header, but his effort went wide.

Dorian Dervite spared Charlton again on the hour mark as Wells rounded several home defenders before thumping it towards goal, but the centre-back cleared it off the line.

The home side were able to rally for a late push as they continued to seek the opening goal of the match, but they continued to be frustrated by a solid Huddersfield defence, ensuring that the sides finished the match level.
