Brendan Rodgers: 'Steven Gerrard shouldn't be solely responsible for big moments'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says that it is not solely up to Steven Gerrard to create "special" moments in matches.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that Steven Gerrard should not be the only player in his team that can create "something special" in a game.

The England international opened the scoring for the Reds in their 2-1 victory over Sunderland on Wednesday.

"He is a guy who steps up in the big moments in games," Rodgers told reporters. "When we need something special in the game the other night he stepped up and scored so there is no doubt people look to him, but it shouldn't just be Steven's responsibility.

"You saw him the other night giving orders to the team, which is important because it is too late if you are in the changing room and have conceded a goal."

Liverpool, who are just one point behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, take on Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.
