Half-Time Report: Gouffran edges Newcastle ahead

Yoan Gouffran scores the only goal of the first half to put Newcastle United ahead of West Bromwich Albion.

An early goal from Yoan Gouffran has given Newcastle United a 1-0 lead against West Bromwich Albion.

Newcastle opened the scoring in the eighth minute when the lively Papiss Cisse picked out Gouffran, who headed the ball past Ben Foster.

West Brom were rocked by the opening goal and would have been two behind if Yohan Cabaye's 25-yard effort could have just dipped under the crossbar.

Despite being out of position for the opening goal, Foster made up for his error as he first denied Steven Taylor before tipping away another Cabaye shot.

Cisse found himself in plenty of space inside the box later in the first period but his header lacked power and Foster kept the ball out.

The returning Goran Popov almost gifted the visitors a second goal with a poor pass across the area but Cisse was once again guilty of being wasteful in front of goal as he chipped his effort over the crossbar.
