Getafe climb to safety with shock win over Valencia

Getafe beat Valencia 3-1 at the Mestalla to climb out of the La Liga relegation zone.

Getafe have climbed out of the La Liga relegation zone by beating Valencia 3-1 at the Mestalla.

The hosts took the lead inside six minutes courtesy of Eduardo Vargas, who met a cross into the box to head past Jordi Codina.

Getafe soon turned the game on its head, however, when Angel Lafita struck from distance to level the contest, before Ciprian Marcia gave Los Azulanes the lead with his bullet header.

Jeremy Mathieu thought he had levelled the contest on the hour mark, but his header was kept out by Codina in some style.

Los Che pushed for a goal as they game wore on, and they very nearly found one when Alcacer Paco fired an effort towards goal from close range, though his strike came back off the crossbar.

Getafe sealed the victory with a third goal two minutes from time thanks to Pedro Leon, who found the bottom corner of the net after weaving through the Valencia defence and breaking through.
