Celtic too strong for Partick Thistle

Goals from Kris Commons and Tomas Rogic give Celtic a 2-0 win over Partick Thistle in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic have made it back-to-back wins at the start of the Scottish Premiership season with a 2-0 victory over Partick Thistle at Firhill Stadium this afternoon.

Leigh Griffiths had a string of chances in the opening 15 minutes for Celtic, but he headed just wide from an Emilio Izaguirre cross, before Tomas Cerny denied him later on.

Ronny Deila's side managed to break the deadlock just before the half-hour mark as Callum McGregor made a quick run down the left before crossing in for Tomas Rogic, leaving the midfielder to rifle the ball home in his first start since returning from a loan spell in the A-League.

Virgil van Dijk could have added a second for the visitors when he carved his way through the Partick defence shortly before the break, but his finish ended up in the side-netting.

The home side finished the first half strongly, with Callum Booth and Gary Miller both trying to set up Steven Lawless, but the Celtic defence did enough to hold on to their lead.

Booth had a shot of his own shortly after the restart as Partick tried to get back on level terms, but he fired well wide after creating some space on the edge of the box.

The champions doubled their advantage with just over an hour played as Kris Commons drew Cerny out from goal before chipping over the Partick keeper.

Griffiths kept the home keeper busy as he attempted to add a third for Celtic just a couple of minutes later with a low strike from just outside the box, but Cerny made a diving save to keep it out.

Celtic continued to look the more likely as Commons and Griffiths linked up down the right, before Van Dijk attempted to get forward again, only for Commons to fire wide.

Partick summer signing Mathias Pogba tried to pull one back for the home side with less than 10 minutes remaining when attempting to smash the ball in from long range, but the striker's effort lacked accuracy.

Pogba made another run at the Celtic goal with just moments remaining, shaking off a challenge from Nir Bitton before unleashing a powerful strike, but Craig Gordon made the save.
