Heerenveen have been forced to settle for the final Europa League playoff place in the Eredivisie after FC Twente scored three goals in five second-half minutes to take a 3-1 victory at the Abe Lenstra Stadion.
An early Luciano Slagveer goal had looked to have given the Super Frisians hope of finishing ahead of PEC Zwolle, but a brace from Hakim Ziyech and a third goal from Orlando Engelaar saw the visitors to victory.
Slagveer gave Heerenveen the lead inside the opening 60 seconds after Henk Veerman managed to prod the ball past an onrushing Nick Marsman before the winger slid in to score from a tight angle.
Twente were denied an equaliser midway through the second half when Youness Mokhtar's shot stung the palms of Kristoffer Nordfeldt.
However, the home side's hopes of finishing ahead of Zwolle were dented when Ziyech scored twice in a minute to give Twente the lead.
Their comeback was complete when Ziyech turned provider for Engelaar, and the midfielder made sure of a victory that gives Twente eighth spot ahead of Groningen and Willem II.
