Magpies boss Alan Pardew made nine alterations to the XI that drew 1-1 with Sunderland on Sunday, with Papiss Cisse among those recalled.

The Senegalese striker was guilty of missing Newcastle's best chance of the period when he headed Shane Ferguson's cross straight at Brugge goalkeeper Bojan Jorgacevic.

Cisse's striker partner, Sammy Ameobi enjoyed a bright first half during which his best moment saw him dribble past three Brugge defenders, only to fire his finish wide.

Brugge's only notable opportunity came courtesy of a Cheick Tiote mistake, but Steven Taylor was on hand to block Maxime Lestienne's goalbound shot.

Cisse had another headed chance as the interval approached, but sent his close-range effort over the crossbar.
